BA Level 2 SWS / 3 Credits, Prof. Dr. Andres Lepik
AR20023
Exhibitions have internationally influenced the development of architecture since the beginning of the 20th century. Due to their public nature they are an effective form to convey ideas and concepts to a broad public and to change the general perception of architecture. Ranging from the Werkbund exhibition in Cologne to the current Architecture Biennale in Venice, the lecture intends to provide a survey of important milestones of architectural history by means of specific examples, focusing on exhibitions that have taken a direct position towards current questions. They will deal with building exhibitions as well as architectural exhibitions, with some formats complementing each other. Central questions are directed at the concept, implementation, design, conveyance, criticism and the consequences of these exhibitions. An additional aspect of examination is the possible exploitation of architectural exhibitions for propaganda purposes. The lecture aims at gaining an understanding of the complex theory and practice of architectural exhibitions as a specific design task by means of comparing analyses.
Knowledgeable and critical reading of scientific specialized texts in German, English or other foreign language; knowledge of obtaining scientific literature from libraries and Internet portals is expected.
Participants learn to critically deal with complex issues with their own observation and on the basis of literature, and to discuss them during a presentation. Thus they learn to phrase their own theses, practice structured argumentation and to defend the positions they have developed in front of a larger public. Students will also be taught how to edit texts and the proceedings of visual presentation, in order to qualify for independent scientific work.
