Only 36 years after the propaganda games of the National Socialists in Berlin, the Olympic Games in Munich were to carry the image of a young, modern, democratic Germany into the world. Otl Aicher, who created the visual image for the city and the Games, played a major role in this. The Munich Games had an integrating effect on the West German population, conveyed the self-image of a new generation and the light, curved tent roof of the sports facilities became the symbol of a new era.

The seminar will deal with the image of the young Federal Republic as a "training ground of a democracy" in distinction to the National Socialist Olympic Games 1936 in Berlin in all its facets - architecture, landscape, design, art and terror. Lectures and visits are planned, including to Rotis and the hfg Ulm, the places where Otl Aicher worked.
