Design and Building Typology - Systems

COURSE STRUCTURE
The ‘Design and Building Typology: Systems’ studio focusses on the research and application of bioregional building materials. The aim is to create a sound basis for innovative and sustainable design solutions through targeted material research and analysis. Students from each group analyse specific materials and become ‘experts’ in their material. The findings of all groups are incorporated into the subsequent design phase and support the studio in the development of holistic designs.
The studio process is divided into three phases:
- Material research and analysis. The students analyse bioregional building materials in terms of their ecological, technical and design properties. Materials are collected in a physical and online material library (revalu.io).
- Artefact development for the loop market. In this phase, artefacts are produced that clearly explain the structure and principles of a Ratisbona loop market.
- Design project: Untersteinach supermarket. Using their specialist knowledge, the students design sustainable concepts for the refurbishment of an existing supermarket and apply their findings from materials research in a targeted manner.
The studio combines scientific research with practice-orientated application and promotes the conscious use of bioregional building materials in existing buildings. In the design phase, specific inputs as well as external guests will support the student projects towards a presentation at the end of the semester.
