From December 3 to 15, 2024, the exhibition Comb Sisters: Architecture of a Women’s Collective, based on research by master’s graduate Yingjia Tan, will be held at the Pavilion 333. Organized by the Architektur Museum der TUM, the exhibition explores the radical communal architecture of the Comb Sisters.
The Comb Sisters were a women’s collective pioneering female autonomy. In the 19th century, many women in the Canton Delta made a conscious choice to remain unmarried and independent. Through their work in the silk industry, they achieved economic independence and rejected traditional roles within marriage and family. Instead, they introduced the Combing Up ritual - a ceremony through which they declared themselves as unmarried, autonomous women in a community with other women.
The exhibition showcases archival maps, historical documents, and findings from a three-month field study, including photos of abandoned communal houses and interviews with the last generation of Comb Sisters. This exhibition expands on Yingjia Tan’s master’s thesis, supervised by Prof. Lepik at the TUM Chair of History of Architecture and Curatorial Practice.
