Final Review of the Master projects ECOLOPES by the Professorship of Green Technologies in Landscape Architecture (Prof. Ferdinand Ludwig):
The project is distinguished by its strong connections to cutting-edge research outcomes. It offers students a new integrative vision of the role of architecture and urban planning for nature-based solutions, which revolutionizes perspectives on sustainability. The novel solution, ecolope (an ecological building envelope), breaks through the ongoing human-nature dichotomy, shifting from creating “land sparing” to “land sharing”. It is a revolutionary concept for building envelopes, aiming to provide habitats for four types of inhabitants: humans, plants, animals, and microbiota living in the soil. To make a design proposal for an ecolope, students will be introduced to a systematic design approach based on computational design and informed by modeling the relationships between building structure, abiotic environment, and the different inhabitants considered. Thereby, they will have the opportunity to apply the beta version of the latest research outcome and contribute to the ongoing research project. The design process will be facilitated with the ECOLOPES design platform and supported by experts in ecology and computer-aided design.
