Race, Space & Architecture: Ethics, Methods and the Canon
by Huda Tayob

followed by a conversation and Q+As

The talk is both, Parity Jour Fixe no. 20
and part of Module 5 Ethics of "Approaching research practice in architecture 2".

Race, Space & Architecture, co-curated by Huda Tayob, Thandi Loewenson and Suzi Hall, is a curriculum project that questions what architecture is, and what it might be. It is a methodological intervention, and an epistemological provocation. As a project that assembles a vast archive around 6 key frames, it offers a starting point to question the relationship between race-making and space-making. This talk will reflect on the structure of the curriculum in relation to questions around the ethics of open-access and the methodological potential of a wider engagement beyond architectural disciplinary boundaries – drawing from examples in the curriculum along with wider research.

Huda Tayob is currently a lecturer in Architectural Studies at the University of Manchester. She has previously taught at the University of Cape Town, the Graduate School of Architecture, University of Johannesburg and the Bartlett School of Architecture, where she received her PhD. She is a Mellon Fellow on the Canadian Centre for Architecture project, Centring Africa. Her research focuses on minor, migrant and subaltern architectures. She is co-curator of the open access curriculum Racespacearchitecture.org, and the digital exhibition, Archive of Forgetfulness.

The evening will be convened by Torsten Lange (TUM), Meike Schalk (KTH&TUM), Elena Markus (TUM), Andreas Putz(TUM) and Karin Reisinger (KTH).
