Climate Active Bricks
In collaboration with the Associate Professorship of Architectural Design and Building Envelope and the Chair of Building Technology and Climate Responsive Design, we are offering two interlinked seminars on the topic of "Climate Active Bricks" this semester:
Robotic Fabrication in Architecture (DF) | 6 ECTS
Adaptive Building Envelopes (BE) | 6 ECTS
The flexibility and modularity in the laying and joining of bricks are a prominent subject of research in digital fabrication, which enables architects to produce a variety of complex brickwork structures with robots directly from a digital model. While research in the field of digital fabrication of brickwork has mainly focused on design aspects and the optimization of structural performance in recent years, little attention has been paid to the innovation potential of bricks with regard to the optimization of climatic functions through geometric and material differentiation in the building envelope.
The aim of the module "Climate Active Bricks" is thus to integrate the potential of robotic fabrication with the use and activation of climate-active properties of bricks in building envelopes and to investigate the diverse possibilities for improving the local microclimate in urban areas. The didactic methodology of the seminar includes digital and analog design studies, experimental setups that allow the measurement of parameters with regard to the microclimatic effect, the feedback of measurement data to a digital model, as well as the verification of the hypothesis via demonstrator objects on a 1: 1 scale.
