Green Typologies - Trees, Time, Architecture!

Trees are among the oldest and most complex living organisms on Earth. With lifespans ranging from decades to centuries, they surpass the temporal scales of human planning and challenge conventional thinking in architecture and urban design. In urban spaces, they are increasingly gaining importance – as elements regulating the microclimate, as integral components of ecosystems, and as silent witnesses to historical, political, and spatial transformations. The seminar Trees, Time, Architecture! builds on the themes of the exhibition of the same name and explores the potential of urban trees as design, social, and ecological elements in architecture and landscape architecture. The focus is on a process-oriented approach that emphasizes long-term, sustainable thinking in relation to living systems, rather than simply focusing on the finished object. At the heart of the seminar is the tree as a living system. Throughout the semester, participants observe a selected city tree in Munich and analyze its ecological and social interactions with the surrounding environment. The goal is to develop a deeper understanding of the role trees play in the urban context through precise observation and documentary methods.
The seminar is complemented by excursions and guest lectures and is aimed at students of landscape architecture, architecture, and urban design (bachlor and master) who are interested in a transdisciplinary approach to urban development.
Goal:
A key methodological focus of the seminar is videography. Students use the medium to analyze, document, and artistically reflect on the dynamics of the tree and its environment. The seminar explores the present moment of the tree, investigating how it is situated within the urban landscape and the interactions that shape its existence.
The outcome of the seminar will be a 10-minute film.
Important: Participation is limited to 21 people. An introductory task to be completed before the seminar begins serves to select participants and ensure a thorough engagement with the topics. More information will be provided after registration via TUM-Online.
