VERTICAL OPEN SPACE Seminar
In the seminar Vertical Open Spaces we are looking for new hybrid typologies between building architecture and landscape architecture. Social, geopolitical, and climatic changes put great pressure on urban open spaces and create huge challenges for cities and their occupants. A particular challenge is that of reurbanisation, through which buildings are constructed in high densities at the expense of existing open spaces. However, there is great popular demand more proximity to nature as well as for high quality open spaces close to people's homes. Successful urban life necessarily needs sufficient supply and mixture of public, semi-public and private parks. This point of tension calls to rethink current urban development and take into account the vertical – the "Z-axis" – to create new possibilities in the city. In the seminar, we will investigate vertical open spaces worldwide. The found hybrids of architecture and outdoor, of vegetation and technical components, will be analysed and discussed with different guests. The next step includes incorporating gained knowledge and representing it graphically, drawing comparisons and creating a comprehensive catalogue of possibilities.
