NEBourhoods – Redesigning Housing Structures
The NEB Action “Redesigning Housing Structures” is investigating how the structural deficits of existing residential buildings can be improved socially, technically and economically. The aim is to create an energy upgrade and social benefit at the same time by renovating façades and extending existing living spaces with prefabricated timber elements or reused components.
A large-scale demonstrator will be created at the end of a systematic investigation chain and the evaluation of the typological performance of different building types. The proposed measures contribute to climate justice through the use of renewable materials. In addition, the aim is to selectively increase the range of housing on offer and to reduce land consumption and settlement pressure by increasing settlement efficiency. The project is a prototype for similar large post-war housing estates throughout Germany and Europe. The possibilities of a digitalized workflow from inventory to production make the findings generally applicable.
