Urban in-between spaces are a common phenomenon characterized by urban morphology, planning elude or ownership transfer reasons. The term in-between spaces refer to spaces of absence, voids, and the gaps between the forms of objects (Lega, Piccinno, 2012.). These spaces, whether built or natural, public or private, can play a fundamental role in shaping a city, either by dividing or connecting, and by providing new perspectives for social, economic or ecological uses. Hence, they can play a significant role in being an interface between different modes of existence. Acknowledging this, the seminar tries to explore the different types of in-between spaces (ie: mobility infrastructure voids, unused-underused spaces etc) across various scales. Also, to uncover the role they are playing and can play in becoming an interface between the social, ecological and economical dimension of a city.
The seminar aims at developing strategies to integrate these in-between spaces into the fragmented urban structures and create connections around these segregated areas with process oriented design intervention.
What sort of strategies (spatial or programmatic) can we design based on different in-between space networks to influence ecological, social or economical cohesion in an urban context?
Based on this overarching question, students are encouraged to explore different in-between spaces found in urban forms along with their physical characteristics and socio-ecological dynamics. Followed by proposing spatial or programmatic strategies and future scenarios, in long or short term, to transform them into interfaces that will allow or catalyzes social, ecological and economical processes.
