Reactivation of Vienna's Westgürtel - from street space to multifunctional open space
Master's Thesis M.A. Landscape Architecture, Maria Meyer-Giesow
Topic
Due to current topics such as the climate crisis, govern- ment climate targets, discussions about the mobility revolution and the availability of open space, mobility in general has become the focus of many cities. The city of Vienna also has detailed catalogues of measu- res and guiding principles on how to deal with mobility in Vienna in the future. Nevertheless, the Gürtel is still one of the streets in the country with the highest traffic volume by cars. Despite its central location in the urban fabric, it forms a strong barrier between the inner and outer city districts due to its three to five lanes and heavy traffic. The aim of the master‘s thesis „gürtel.conncection“ is to develop a landscape architectural concept to transform the Gürtel from a street space with little quality of stay to a multifunctional open space in the city.In the analysis, the Gürtel and the adjoining urban typo- logies are examined in terms of the urban environment, the street space and mobility. Reference projects are then analysed to identify different approaches to the transfor- mation of street spaces.Based on the results of the analysis and the theoretical background, a superordinate design for the Westgürtel is developed on the basis of the measures listed in the concept. Subsequently, two different sections of the Gürtel will be examined in more detail. The aim of both designs is to react to the different existing conditions in terms of design and function and to propose solutions for the site-specific problems. In the conclusion, the design is summarised and a short outlook into the future is given.
