Big, green & crisp - urban transformation of the Grossmarkthalle area in Munich
Big, green & crisp - urban transformation of the Grossmarkthalle area in Munich
Summer semester 2025 - Module ED120078
Bachelor project 4th semester - 15 ECTS

In order to avoid further land consumption and constant urban sprawl, cities must focus on redeveloping underused and fragmented areas in already developed areas - the principle of inner development. In Munich in particular, where land in the urban area is becoming increasingly scarce, there are hardly any opportunities for this type of development.
In addition to the still pressing issue of (affordable) housing, new strategies for climate adaptation, alternative forms of mobility, sustainable construction methods, flexible spaces for new uses, urban production and biodiverse habitats will play a central role in the development of the area.
The Großmarkhalle area will change over the next few years. The City of Munich is only at the beginning of its deliberations on the possible future of the site and we will be demonstrating perspectives with initial experiments. The focus is on a thorough analysis to understand the potential of the site. The project will consist of several sub-projects and the students will investigate the site and program of their choice.
The Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations of the City of Munich will accompany this process as a cooperation partner. This offers the opportunity to better understand the dynamics of urban redevelopment based on real projects and to discuss them with experts.
