Westside Stories
Future-oriented transformation of the former industrial Main riverside, Frankfurt Westside, DE
The Frankfurt Westside area, situated along the Main River, will soon become Frankfurt’s largest commercial and industrial mixed-use campus. Creativity, innovation, and productivity are some key terms that this development is based on, and it aims to create a visionary campus where industrial and commercial activities generate harmonious symbioses. The planning of the Westside is already ongoing and almost ready to be implemented, but the Westcoast, which is the area along the northern bank of the Main, is not yet fully developed. The Westcoast is expected to follow the visionary planning processes of the Westside and eventually be reconnected to the city and its surroundings.
The project studio of this summer semester revolves around the northern bank of the Main River aiming at reintegrating it into the ongoing city planning. Since the area has been isolated for several years due to industrial activities, it lacks connectivity, programming, and a unique character that will be combined with the new commercial and industrial campus. In this Master’s project, students will develop a new plan for the 12-hectare site along the Main River, examine and test processes for climateadaptive solutions, and design concepts for its visionary future.
