ΕΛΕΥΣΙΣ - ELEFSIS
One of the largest industrial centres of Greece and this year's announced European cultural capital, Elefsina combines mythos and cultural landscape along its industrial harbour and urban fabric. Being dominated by industrial activity since ancient times, the city has several abandoned industries along its coast. The former wine distillery Kronos is one of these emblematic brownfields and it is situated at the east end of the coast line, neighboured by the city fabric and sea shore. The industrial landscape and infrastructure of the former industry have been abandoned since 1986, and the city is in need of a new planning for this strategic area. Elefsina offers a great opportunity for investigation and formulation of strategies which confront cultural, historical, environmental and landscape architectural challenges.
The students will be asked to work on multiple scales to identify the characteristics, qualities, frictions, and challenges of Elefsina and later to zoom-in and transform the landscape of the former wine distillery industry. How can we design with landscape processes in a complex urban waterfront area? Which is the best strategy to engage with industrial heritage and dynamics of landscapes?
