Ecological Houses. Green Buildings from the 1970/80s
Elisabeth Freundorfer Summer term 2022
Topic of the master thesis are the early days of ecological building in Germany. As a result of the spreading knowledge about climate change and scarcity of resources, in combination with the oil crisis at the beginning of the 1970s, different ways of building ecologically developed. Those can be split up into Light, Solar, Natural and Participative Building. Architects of early ecological houses combined individual measures of different branches with the goal of creating concepts as profoundly energy-efficient and ecological as possible. In the thesis three early examples in Munich (Wohnanlage Genter Straße, Wohnhaus für 6 Familien, Wohnanlage Richter) are examined, concerning individual approach, detailing, changes, and accordance to regulations then and nowadays. Subsequently, a concept for the preservation of one of those houses will be developed. In this way, the following thesis will be verified: “Early ecological houses are still to be regarded as such, due to the profound approach and thus pioneering also for current ecological design."
