Mentoring Master’s Program "Building in Existing Structures"

The Department of Architecture at the Technical University of Munich offers Mentoring Masters as part of its consecutive Master’s courses. These Mentoring Masters offer students to study with selected professors with individually tailored curricula according to respective focal points. The Professorships of Entwerfen, Umbau und Denkmalpflege, Prof. Andreas Hild, Recent Building Heritage Conservation, Prof. Andreas Putz, and Building History, Building Archaeology and Conservation, Prof. Alexander von Kienlin, jointly offer the mentoring programme Building in Existing Structures (Bauen im Bestand).

The content of the programme focuses on the challenges of recent building stock for conservation and further development and conversion. Based on the documentation of existing buildings and their condition, as well as the analysis and evaluation of existing structures – from individual buildings to large estates – practical solutions for building conservation, from the preservation of listed buildings to conversion and adaptive reuse are developed and discussed in projects and exercises. The design projects are aimed at a high level of detail and processual thinking. Accompanying lectures, seminars, hands-on exercises and excursions provide in-depth knowledge of methods, typologies and practices of re-building, building repair and conservation, of constructions and materials in existing buildings, building physics, building technology, architectural history, methods and know-how of historic building research, theories and practice of building conservation and the preservation of listed buildings, as well as fundamental ecological and economical aspects of building culture, all relating to the value-based maintenance and adaptation of existing buildings, which are discussed with the students.

The mentoring program is aimed at inquiry-based, scientifically sound and responsible management of the increasing challenges in dealing with the existing structures and building stocks. Great significance is therefore attached to the supervised preparation of the individual Master's thesis, which combines research, reflective and planning elements and is prepared step by step over the duration of the mentoring program.

In order to graduate from the Master's degree program with a certificate in Building in Existing Structures at least the following achievements must be successfully completed at the participating professorships:

- two of three projects in the MA Architecture program (2x 15 ECTS)

- lectures, exercises, seminars, excursions totaling 30 ECTS, module catalogue attached

- preparatory seminar MA Thesis (3 ECTS)

- MA Thesis (30 ECTS)

the remaining 27 ECTS credits can be acquired according to individual preferences.

It is possible to join the mentoring program in the first and second semesters of the Master's degree course. Interested students must be admitted to the MA level at TUM. Applications should be sent by email to the chosen professorship with a short letter of motivation, a portfolio of exemplary design or research work and a CV.
