Building the Future – Insights from the AMC – TRR 277 Symposium at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar
On March 31 and April 1, 2025, the AMC Symposium Building the Future: From “Form Follows Function” to “Form Follows Material” took place at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Over 100 participants from research and industry discussed digital design, robotic fabrication, and material-driven construction. Keynotes by Prof. Kathrin Dörfler, Prof. Harald Kloft, and Prof. Caitlin Mueller (MIT) highlighted current research. A guided tour of the Bauhaus Museum Weimar rounded off the event.

Computational Design and Fabrication – Project Week
From March 24–28, 2025, the CDF Project Week took place at Additive Tectonics in Lupburg. Fifteen interdisciplinary students from Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Information Technologies for the Built Environment developed design variations for an earth-based, 3D-printed pavilion and tested detail solutions through scaled prototypes. The goal was to promote an integral design approach that combines structural behavior, material properties, printing techniques, and aesthetic qualities. A team from TRR 277—Additive Manufacturing in Construction guided the week.

Co-Creating Machines Symposium
On April 3-4, 2025, the symposium “Co-Creating Machines” will take place at the TUM Science & Study Center Raitenhaslach statt. Im Fokus steht die Rolle von Künstlicher Intelligenz als Werkzeug für Design und Bauwesen. The focus is set on the role of artificial intelligence as a tool for design and construction. How can AI-supported solutions be designed flexibly and sustainably? Organized by Prof. Pierluigi D’Acunto (TUM Structural Design), Prof. Kathrin Dörfler (TUM Digital Fabrication) und Prof. Jeannette Kuo (TUM Architecture and Construction), the event brings together leading experts from research and practice.

Presentation “Text to Structural Form 3D” at NVIDIA GTC
Prof. Karla Saldaña Ochoa (University of Florida) gave a poster presentation on behalf of the team consisting of Prof. Pierluigi D'Acunto and Lazlo Bleker together with Prof. Kam-Ming Mark Tam (University of Hong Kong), Zifeng Guo (STRABAG) and Kaleb Smith (NVIDIA). The talk was held about “Text to Structural Form 3D: Enhancing structural form-finding through a text-based AI engine leveraging NVIDIA A100 GPU for LLM label creation.” at the NVIDIA GTC.

On 22 November 2024 Prof. Pierluigi D'Acunto, together with Prof. Katrin Dörfler and Prof. Anna Keune, collaborated with Prof. Nathalie Bredella for the initiative “Agentive Matter(s)” - Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). Agentive Matter(s) is a two-phase initiative that aims to identify new approaches to teaching and learning about how technologies transport societal discourses from the past into the future.

Presentation on ML-Based Visualization for Structural Design
On 21 November, Prof. Pierluigi D'Acunto, along with Tao Sun and Cem Gunes, presented their research titled "Unified Workflow and Toolkit for Form-Finding, Solid Geometry Generation, and Visualization" to the CORE team of the engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti. The presentation was conducted in an online meeting, showcasing advancements in machine learning-based tools for structural design.

On 9 July 2024, Prof. Pierluigi D’Acunto was invited as a critic to the final presentation of the master's project "SUPERSTRUTTURA. Foro Boario di Padova". The project, offered by Prof. Andreas Putz (Professorship of Recent Building Heritage Conservation), dealt with the complex challenges of preserving modern design, construction and materials in the design.

27. Projektetage der Bauforschung - Zukunft Bau
As part of our Zukunft Bau funding for the project: Hybrid Asymptotic Geodesic Timber Grids, the 27th “Projektetage der Bauforschung” were held at the BBSR in Bonn from 11 to 12 June 2024. Sebastian Hoyer presented the current status of the ongoing project for us. The event offered a lot of interesting project presentations and a good framework for discussing the projects with other researchers.

Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk
Prof. Anna Keune (Learning Sciences and Educational Design Technologies) and Prof. Pierluigi D'Acunto held a talk titled "Some of them were too simple’: Architecture students design structures with everyday objects" as part of the format "Scientists Meet Scientists". Educational approaches that integrate both architectural design expertise and structural engineering principles are lacking. First-year undergraduate architecture students' application of structural principles were investigated as they designed structural balancing structures with everyday objects.

Now available: Conceptual Design of Structures
"Conceptual Design of Structures", edited by Prof. Pierluigi D’Acunto, Dr. Patrick Ole Ohlbrock and Roland Pawlitschko, is about working at the interface between structural engineering, architecture, and art. The book seeks to answer the complex question of what needs to be considered when conceiving a building structure. The book thus sheds light on the topic of multidisciplinary interrelationships in design, showing numerous different perspectives.

On 13.09.2023, Lazlo Bleker was awarded the Georg Nemetschek Award by the TUM GNI. The prize recognizes Lazlo's doctoral work on "Logic-Informed Graph Neural Networks for Structural Form-Finding" and was awarded for best poster and presentation at the session on "AI for the Sustainable Built World" at the Future of Construction Symposium 2023.

Presentation of the Injection 3D Concrete Printing (I3DCP) Bridge in Venice
The Injection 3D Concrete Printing Bridge was officially presented at the opening of the Time Space Existence exhibition in Venice, which runs parallel to the Biennale Architettura 2023. The bridge was designed using the Vector-based Graphic Statics (VGS) method developed at the Chair of Structural Design and manufactured using the I3DCP technology developed at TU Braunschweig. The bridge will be on display at the Palazzo Mora in Venice until the end of November.

Opening of the Asymptotic Geodesic Timber Vault
On 8 November 2022, the Asymptotic Geodesic Timber Vault was opened in the Kreativquartier in Munich. The Timber Vault investigates the possibility of producing high-performance shell structures from thin wooden elements with minimal use of materials. The research project is a collaboration between the University of Hong Kong and the TUM Professorship for Structural Design.

As part of the seminar „Computational Design and Fabrication“, an excursion to the TU Braunschweig took place from 20-22 September 2022. The topic of the seminar was the form-finding and realisation of a pedestrian bridge using textile formwork and 3D printing from concrete. A 1:1 scale model was produced in the Digital Building Fabrication Laboratory at TU Braunschweig.

Excursion of the seminar Computational Design and Fabrication SoSe 2022, TU-Delft
From 14-16 July 2022, an excursion to TU-Delft took place as part of the seminar "Computational Design and Fabrication". The topic of the seminar was the form-finding and realisation of a pedestrian bridge using textile formwork and 3D printing from concrete. At TU-Delft, prototypes of selected designs were produced using a digital knitting machine in collaboration with the Professorship of Parametric Structural Design and Digital Fabrication.

Best Poster Award at the International Textile Conference 2021
Students Clemens Lindner and Tao Sun receive the Best Poster Award 2021 for their poster “Adaptive Shading Systems - a development for transformable grid structures” at the Aachen-Dresden-Denkendorf International Textile Conference. The project, led by Jonas Schikore and Prof. Pierluigi D'Acunto, is part of the development of the Kinetic Umbrella.

Lecture "Graphic Statics for the Conceptual Design of Strong Structures" at HIT Shenzhen
Prof. Pierluigi D'Acunto was invited by the Harbin Institute of Technology in Shenzhen and the Chinese publishing house Position to give a lecture on the use of graphical statics for the design of structures. The lecture will take place online on November 5, 2021.

Project MA WiSe 2021/22 - Bridge the Gap - Excursion at FIT AG
Between November 2 – 4, our project team and students have been hosted by FIT AG and Additive Tectonics in their facilities at Lupburg, Bavaria. FIT AG is an internationally leading industry partner for the additive manufacturing of components, and Additive Tectonics is a subsidiary of the FIT AG to revolutionize construction through 3D printing.

Project MA WiSe 2021/22 - Bridge the Gap
The research-based design studio Bridge the Gap is carried out as a collaboration between the Professorship for Structural Design and the Professorship for Digital Fabrication. In the design studio computational tools for structural design and novel robotic fabrication, technologies are used to design and build a lightweight pedestrian bridge at the Deutsche Bundesbank in Munich.

Prof. Pierluigi D'Acunto has been invited by the Dutch engineering company Royal HaskoningDHV to give a lecture on computational structural design as part of the Computational Design Hackathon 2021. The lecture will take place online on October 1, 2021.

Opening of the Kinetic Umbrella in the Kreativquartier Munich
The grand opening of the Kinetic Umbrella took place on September 10, 2021. The convertible umbrella construction will remain on the open-air grounds of Import-Export (Kreativquartier München), where it will serve as a space-shaping and shade-providing element of the event area.

Opening of the LoX pavilions as part of the Kunstareal Festival
LoX, a cooperation between the Professorship of Digital Fabrication and the Professorship of Structural Design with the Zurich start-up incon.ai, invites you to a collective construction process made possible by augmented reality (AR). LoX will be shown for the first time as part of the Kunstareal Festival in Munich, where a pavilion will be built collaboratively by students of the Technical University of Munich on July 10 and 11, 2021.
