IASS 2024 Workshop
On the first day of the IASS 2024 Symposium in Zurich, Switzerland, members of the Professorship of Structural Design, Prof. Pierluigi D'Acunto and Lazlo Bleker, together with collaborators Prof. Karla Saldaña Ochoa (University of Florida), Prof. Kam-Ming Mark Tam (University of Hong Kong), Dr. Guo Zifeng, (STRABAG) Dr. Kaleb Smith (NVIDIA) and Tao Sun (Drees & Sommer) organized a workshop on Machine Learning-Assisted Computational Structural Design.

IASS 2024 Symposium
The IASS 2024 Symposium, held from August 25 to 30 in Zurich, Switzerland, featured active participation from the Professorship of Structural Design. Our team, represented by Lazlo Bleker, Frederic Chovghi, Feifan He, Sebastian Hoyer, Tao Sun and Prof. Pierluigi D'Acunto,, delivered five impactful presentations highlighting recent developments in our research on structural design.

The School Fest of the TUM School of Engineering and Design took place on 12 July 2024 at the TUM Campus in Garching. At the Science and Innovation Fair, PhD students and graduates presented their research work on posters or presented their work in short pitches. Our team was represented with six current research topics.

Final Review MA Project "SUPERSTRUTTURA. Foro Boario Padova" SoSe 2024
On 9 July 2024, Prof. Pierluigi D’Acunto was invited as a critic to the final presentation of the master's project "SUPERSTRUTTURA. Foro Boario di Padova". The project, offered by Prof. Andreas Putz (Professorship of Recent Building Heritage Conservation), dealt with the complex challenges of preserving modern design, construction and materials in the design.

Seminar "GREEN TYPOLOGIES Garching Pavilion" at TUM Sustainability Day
On 12 June 2024 the results of the seminar ‘GREEN TYPOLOGIES Garching Pavilion Follow-up’ were presented as part of the TUM Sustainability Day. The interdisciplinary seminar, part of the studio project Design-Build-Grow of the Professorship for Green Technologies in Landscape Architecture, was accompanied by Prof. Pierluigi D'Acunto and Sebastian Dietrich.

27. Projektetage der Bauforschung - Zukunft Bau
As part of our Zukunft Bau funding for the project: Hybrid Asymptotic Geodesic Timber Grids, the 27th “Projektetage der Bauforschung” were held at the BBSR in Bonn from 11 to 12 June 2024. Sebastian Hoyer presented the current status of the ongoing project for us. The event offered a lot of interesting project presentations and a good framework for discussing the projects with other researchers.

Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk
Prof. Anna Keune (Learning Sciences and Educational Design Technologies) and Prof. Pierluigi D'Acunto held a talk titled "Some of them were too simple’: Architecture students design structures with everyday objects" as part of the format "Scientists Meet Scientists". Educational approaches that integrate both architectural design expertise and structural engineering principles are lacking. First-year undergraduate architecture students' application of structural principles were investigated as they designed structural balancing structures with everyday objects.

Now available: Conceptual Design of Structures
"Conceptual Design of Structures", edited by Prof. Pierluigi D’Acunto, Dr. Patrick Ole Ohlbrock and Roland Pawlitschko, is about working at the interface between structural engineering, architecture, and art. The book seeks to answer the complex question of what needs to be considered when conceiving a building structure. The book thus sheds light on the topic of multidisciplinary interrelationships in design, showing numerous different perspectives.

15. Conference on Structural Analysis - Building Practice
Prof. Kai-Uwe Bletzinger (Lehrstuhl für Statik, TUM) and Prof. Pierluigi D'Acunto organised a mini-symposium on form-finding and form optimisation as part of the 15th Symposium on Structural Analysis - Building Practice in Hamburg. Within the framework of the symposium, various speakers gave presentations.

Following the final critique in the „Tragwerksentwurf“ course, the students' models were exhibited in the Design Factory for a fortnight from 8 February 2024. The plans and models show different designs for a new roof for the TU Munich student workshop.

Finale Critic Studio Design-Build-Grow III WiSe 2023/24
On 12 February 2024, the final presentation of the Design-Build-Grow III Studio of the Professorship for Green Technologies in Landscape Architecture of Prof. Ferdinand Ludwig took place. The landscape architecture project was carried out in cooperation with the Professorship of Structural Design and was also supervised by Prof. Pierluigi D’Acunto and Sebastian Dietrich during the semester.

Frederic Chovghi was awarded 1st place in the University Price of the Bavarian Construction Industry 2023in the innovative materials and constructions category for his master's thesis "Kappendecke 2.0; Structural form-finding and digital fabrication of a 3D-printed self-supporting vaulted ceiling".

Lazlo Bleker wins the Georg Nemetschek Award
On 13.09.2023, Lazlo Bleker was awarded the Georg Nemetschek Award by the TUM GNI. The prize recognizes Lazlo's doctoral work on "Logic-Informed Graph Neural Networks for Structural Form-Finding" and was awarded for best poster and presentation at the session on "AI for the Sustainable Built World" at the Future of Construction Symposium 2023.

Excursion to Uniqum and STS
As part of the subject Structural Research I+II, a guided tour of the 3D concrete printing company Uniqum and the precast concrete company STS was organised. The students were given an insight into the methods of 3D concrete printing, their manufacturing processes and their possible areas of application.

Webinar “Text-based AI Engine for Structural Form-finding”

Presentation of the Injection 3D Concrete Printing (I3DCP) Bridge in Venice
The Injection 3D Concrete Printing Bridge was officially presented at the opening of the Time Space Existence exhibition in Venice, which runs parallel to the Biennale Architettura 2023. The bridge was designed using the Vector-based Graphic Statics (VGS) method developed at the Chair of Structural Design and manufactured using the I3DCP technology developed at TU Braunschweig. The bridge will be on display at the Palazzo Mora in Venice until the end of November.

Registration for the Future of Construction Symposium 2023 is now open. The symposium will provide a platform to discuss novel human-machine teams for design and sustainable construction. Together with the students of the first Bachelor's semester, a colloquium on the results of the practical exercise of "Building Structures 1" took place on 06 February 2023. The students had constructed models from everyday objects on the topic of equilibrium. The practical exercise was organised in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Anna Keune (Learning Sciences and Educational Design Technologies).

Opening of the Asymptotic Geodesic Timber Vault
On 8 November 2022, the Asymptotic Geodesic Timber Vault was opened in the Kreativquartier in Munich. The Timber Vault investigates the possibility of producing high-performance shell structures from thin wooden elements with minimal use of materials. The research project is a collaboration between the University of Hong Kong and the TUM Professorship for Structural Design.

As part of the seminar „Computational Design and Fabrication“, an excursion to the TU Braunschweig took place from 20-22 September 2022. The topic of the seminar was the form-finding and realisation of a pedestrian bridge using textile formwork and 3D printing from concrete. A 1:1 scale model was produced in the Digital Building Fabrication Laboratory at TU Braunschweig.

Excursion of the seminar Computational Design and Fabrication SoSe 2022, TU-Delft
14. - 16.07.2022
From 14-16 July 2022, an excursion to TU-Delft took place as part of the seminar "Computational Design and Fabrication". The topic of the seminar was the form-finding and realisation of a pedestrian bridge using textile formwork and 3D printing from concrete. At TU-Delft, prototypes of selected designs were produced using a digital knitting machine in collaboration with the Professorship of Parametric Structural Design and Digital Fabrication.
