Prof. Dr. Pierluigi D'Acunto
Pierluigi D'Acunto completed his combined degree in Building Engineering-Architecture with honours at the University of Pisa in 2007. He received a Master of Architecture with distinction from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London in 2012. In 2018, he received his doctorate with distinction (ETH Medal) from the Chair of Structural Design at ETH Zurich under the supervision of Professor Joseph Schwartz. Since 2006, he has gained professional experience in various architectural and engineering firms in Italy and Switzerland and has been awarded in several international architectural competitions. From 2012 to 2018, he was a research assistant at the Chair of Structural Design at ETH Zurich, and from 2018 to 2021 a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer. In 2021, he was appointed to the Rudolf-Mössbauer-Tenure-Track-Assistent Professorship for Structural Design at TUM.
As head of the Focus Group on Structural Design at the TUM Institute for Advanced Studies, Pierluigi D'Acunto investigates novel design and construction approaches that enable more efficient use of material resources by exploiting the interplay of form and forces in structures. He develops computer-aided design and analysis methods at the interface between architecture and civil engineering. Further, he also researches innovative material systems and construction processes that utilise pioneering technologies such as additive manufacturing and robotic production.
