The Project of the Egalitarian City
from Barcelona to Munich
Prof. Benedikt Boucsein, Isabel Glogar
The lecture series deals with the history of the development of the contemporary European city in the 19th and 20th centuries. Using the development of eight major European cities or metropolitan areas as examples, important lines of development and exemplary projects that continue to shape our cities today will be highlighted. In each city, a specific topic that is important for understanding urban development is highlighted. The focus is on the European metropolis and here on some of the largest metropolises: Amsterdam (or the outskirts), Paris, Berlin, London, Barcelona, Zurich, the Ruhr region, and finally Munich. Developments such as suburbanization in the broader context of these cities are also addressed; however, the focus is on approaches that address the question of how to create the egalitarian city - the city that enables the participation of all.
