The situation of children in urban poverty and especially in slums is determined as a key global problem
that needs to be addressed urgently. This work elaborates how urban design can positively impact
the living environment in which slum children grow up. It presents the tasks and possibilities of the
urban designers to tackle this problem with a holistic design approach. This approach was applied to
o a case study, a specific slum in Buenos Aires. Based on a holistic participatory process including a
comprehensive on-site analysis and a detailed study of the slum, its neighbourhood and stakeholders,
a design prototype is proposed aiming for a general role model worldwide for other slums.
