Inner-urban Landscapes – Thick Mapping
M.A.ARCHITECTURE// U R B A N DESIGN.SEMINAR//SUMMER-21
VERTIEFUNG AR30223 | SUMMER 2021
(Letzte Aktualisierung: 29.04.2021)
Architects and urban designers frequently use and produce maps as part of their working and design processes. In this seminar we set out to challenge established mapping conventions through “thick mapping”. We want to explore mapping tools that have their emphasis on process and time, as well as the wider frameworks that influence architecture and the built environment. For this purpose, we work with a series of mapping tools that originate from either outside the discipline or from the margins of architectural and urban representation. From the social sciences, we take the model of social worlds/arenas, through which we represent the complex mix of conflicting interests that act upon a given situation.
The seminar is conceived to improve and broaden the participants’ mapping skills and conceptual understanding of mapping. The knowledge thus acquired may be applied in the analysis stage in future design projects, but also as part of an empirically orientated research project.
This seminar is part of a series of research and teaching events that are offered in close collaboration with the Technical University in Athens, the Gennadius Library and the Schwarz Foundation. We are planning to exhibit and publish the key findings and moments of the research project in Athens in 2022.
